For the Thinking People

I am grateful to be alive.

Our God Alone- The Brilliance (cover by The Resound)

thought I’d share this. A buddy of mine and his band wonderfully covered this song by The Brilliance called Our God Alone. Check them out on facebook. Search “The Resound”  The man singing wrote the scores for the strings and arranged all the music.

They covered this at a Korean church in Berrien Springs MI. Enjoy!

Epic Church Chicago: Diversity: Acts 11

epicchurchchicago:

True acceptance will lead to diversity. The New Testament tells us about two groups of disciples that shared the gospel during extreme circumstances at a time when the followers of Christ experienced persecution and the treat of death because of their faith.

One group found it safe to…

I’ve been back training shotokan since I came back from school. It’s been a blast getting back into the groove of things with Enrick (my teacher/friend) been doing a lot of sparring lately. I’ve been training with two white belts and sparring has been tough. Their skill level is much higher than mine. They are very technical and fast and also have their own styles of fighting. But i’m getting used to it because when I start competing, I will be accustomed to fighting people much faster and more technical than me.
We ran a bunch of kicking drills today which tore my hip flexors up! I’ll chip away at it day by day and i should be able to be pretty limber and flexible. I don’t think it will be too long before i start kicking with more confidence.

Daydreaming

I picked up the guitar a little over a year ago. I remember it was out of nowhere and I told my self one day that I was going to learn guitar. So i picked one up from one of my friends and I’ve been playing ever since. There was a 9 month period where I never missed a day without practicing. It drove my Mom mad! It was hard at first but i pushed through the missed chords, awkward finger positioning, and strumming problems and I’ve made it a year doing pretty good I would hope.

I’ve grown to love this guitar. I’ve learned all my favorite songs and even written several of my own. It’s a wonderful way to release built up tension. It has become one of my outlets in life, among other things.

I’ve have become accustomed to taking my guitar to my downtown area, sometimes with some friends by mostly by myself. I open up my case and start playing whatever comes to mind. I play songs that I believe in. Songs that have brought a change in me and hopefully have the potential to bring change to things around me. I know i’m not the best singer and certainly not the best guitar player, but my aim isn’t to showcase my talents or lack thereof. No, my goal is to get these songs out there. Sometimes I draw a crowd and sometimes I don’t. Either way it a fulfilling experience. This feeling is rare to find in this world.

The experience of having different people from all walks of life, coming together to sing the same song. There are lawyers and priests, teachers and students, old and young, black or white, and everything in between. They come together to sing same songs because it is these songs that is the binding glue for humanity. I choose to sing and write songs that are for everyone. I am a Christian yes, but I don’t want to sing or write songs or even write an article that is just for Christians. No, I want my audience to be the human race.

I write and sing for anyone who is wiling to listen or read. I think that is how the Gospel is supposed to be; for everyone! It’s is because of this fact that I think music is an amazing medium between people and the Infinite. Music breaks through the barriers of our minds. It enters our subconscious without permission. Music reaches us despite our differences. It is unreasonable and unconditional. I heard someone say that “music commences where speech ends.”

I believe that it is the artists, the poets, the musicians, the writers, that have a great responsibility in this life. They have the ability to portray a world that does not exist yet. We are able to see a world that has the potential to come true. They are our view into a possible future.

So if you paint, paint a picture of a world where people come together. If you writer then write about a world where people are united under one cause. and if you are a musician then sing a song about a world where things are made right. Create a world that you want to see tomorrow.

Breathing Again

It feels like having a hundred pounds of bricks on your chest. Every attempt of breathing is like trying to breathe through a straw. Your back starts to ache from all the shrugging you’re doing just to let a little bit of air into your lungs. Your chest feels like it is about to cave in. Your eyes are bloodshot and sweat drips down your paling face. For a moment it feels like this is how it all ends. This is what it is like to have an asthma attack. Asthma is a respiratory disorder of the lungs. It causes the airways of the lungs to narrow causing difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. In extreme cases it can lead to death if left untreated during an attack.

Not too long ago, I had to go through this torturous ordeal of having an asthma attack just a week before Christmas. I woke up one morning, after a weekend of having a cold, short of breath. I’ve had asthma all my life so normally my rescue inhaler would do the trick and give me my breath back. Unfortunately it didn’t help. My symptoms progressed and worsened to the point of me almost passing out completely. My mother rushed me to the emergency room and they started me on continuous breathing treatments and large doses of steroids to get my lungs back to a point where they could move enough oxygen to keep me going.

So there I was on the ER bed gasping for breath. Trying to let in as much as much air as I possibly could. Moments pass before I started to think to myself, “what if this is it? Is this how it all ends?” Could this be the end of David Quilatan? It was a scary thought that the next several breaths could be my last. I found myself completely vulnerable and powerless in my state of health. My situation was out of my hands from the beginning of the episode.

If you couldn’t tell already, I made it though ok. I spent a couple of days in the hospital trying to help my lungs get well enough to make it home for Christmas. Upon my discharge, the doctors told me a bit of information that brought on a new perspective to my eyes. He said, with proper treatment and daily maintenance, my lungs will be able to heal properly and I can even live the rest of my life without asthma. Essentially, they told me that my lungs will learn how to breathe again.

In the Christian Bible, The Almighty creates man out of dust. In the first book, Genesis, it tells the story of The Creator who sculpted man from the dirt. It reads, “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground.”It is interesting to note of our “humble” beginnings.Yes, we are born, from the beginning, from filth. We are beings born from a nasty, dirty, and grimy beginning.  It is what Professor Cornell West calls “the funk.” We were made from filth from the beginning and are born from it up to now.

Let’s go back to the Creation Story. At this point, man was not yet finished; he was still lifeless, motionless, and cold, just like the dirt he came from. Man could not be left like this. There needed to be something more. Man needed a final touch to become complete. The Creator had one more step to complete the creation of man. In the Scriptures, it says that the Lord breathed breath into the lungs of man and that gave him life. There is a book in the Bible called Job that tells the same type of story. Job says in chapter 33,

The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.”

He is saying the same thing that had happened all the way back in Genesis. His body, his flesh and bones, were made by God, but it was the Lords breath that gave him life.  In the book of Ezekiel, The Maker is talking to a bunch of what the Book calls “dry bones.” He says that he will cover these bones with tendons and muscle, and skin. He goes on and states again how He will breathe breath into these bones and give them life. Whether it was Job or Adam and Eve, their stories are the same. They were once lifeless and now, springing fourth from the nothingness, there is life. They were once cold pieces of dirt but now they now have something to live for. Their existence now has direction, meaning, and purpose.

The breath that is given to us is something extremely special. It is the same breath that created the space above us. It gave the sun its fire. It put the planets into rotation. It tells every lightning bolt where it will strike. It placed the stars in the sky. This breath turned the Red Sea into a red carpet. It moved mountains. It turned a staff into a snake. It turned Moses hair white. It is the breath that whispered, “It is finished.” The same breath that spoke our world into existence is the same breath that was breathed into us, into our very own lungs.

In the Creation Story, Adam and Eve received this creating breath in the beginning. They did not ask for it, it was given to them. But something happened. An evil scheme was set in place to separate man from this life giving breath, and it worked. The perfect plane of existence The Maker intended us to live on was broken up and threw us on a tangent, a tangent toward our inevitable end. Toward wars, genocide, racism, and hate. Towards death and decay. Towards kids eating out of trash cans and women being sold into sex slavery.  Towards smart bombs that stupidly find their way to innocent civilians. Towards the chaos that we live in today.

It’s a tragic state that we live in. We live in a world in constant turmoil, distress, discontentedness. It’s a dark and scary world that we are born into every day. It’s hard to imagine life other than what we see in front of us when all we ever see is more hurt, more pain, and more suffering. What can free us from, what Shakespeare called, “this mortal coil?” It is a coil that constricts us and squeezes us dry. It is like we are fighting against the tide in a battle that we were never meant to win.

But my friends, there is hope for us yet, because this is where it all starts. I look at this world and all its brokenness, and I can either say one of two things. One: this is just how things are and that this is all that it will ever be. Or two, I can say that there was once something here, something beautiful, that was broken. I see something that is meant to be fixed again. Think of it like seeing ceramic pieces on the floor and coming to the conclusion that there was once a beautiful vase before this mess in front of us.

So this is my prayer to all who find their way to this miniscule topical 1400 word essay. I pray that we all find ourselves with our chest caving in, with our eyes blood shot, and bodies stretched thin. I pray that we find ourselves powerless and completely vulnerable. I pray that we find our situations out of our hands. I hope we find ourselves face down in the ground at the bottom of who we are where there are no pretenses to cling on to. I pray that we find ourselves discontented with this world. And I pray that we all find ourselves desperate, longing, no I pray we find ourselves begging for air again.

This skin and bones we have is not enough my dear friends. They say that you are not alive until you are living, so let us all breathe in the air that gives life, purpose, and meaning. Oh, the precious life giving air.  Let us find ourselves gasping for breath so that we can find ourselves learning to breathe in the everlasting atmosphere of grace once again.

Say Anything

Silence can be harder to deal during a fight. During any heated verbal engagement, when one person is yelling their lungs out and the other person is completely silent, things start to get a bit awkward. The person yelling, despite their best efforts and no matter how loud they scream, they cannot seem to get the other person to say a word!

Girls give guys the silent treatment and that is the worst thing that a man can go through. I’ll be a bit honest and i’m going through that right now. I obviously did some things that I wish I can take back. I forgot who I was when I made decisions and I messed things up between me and a friend. I’ve said what I needed to say and I said it from my heart. I pulled out all the stops on this one and I tried to fix things as best I could.

The worst part about it is, she just won’t talk to me. It would be nice to have her say I forgive you. Heck, i’d even be content with her saying “i think it’s best if we just weren’t close anymore.” But for her not to say ANYTHING is killing me. I guess the need for communication is vital.

They say that there is a room that was made that deadens 99% of external noise. They say it is so quiet that the person in it can hear their heart beat inside their chest. That’s not all, researchers have said that no one can stand more than 30 minutes inside before going crazy.

Silence is terrifying and unsettling. All I wish for right now is for her to say something. Anything. Negative or positive, I’ll take it. Just don’t leave me here to go insane with the silence. Just say something back.

Went to my first Switchfoot concert yesterday night. SO much awesome went on that day so i’ll recap.
My friends and I took our guitars downtown to play some songs before the concert started. It was a good time. earned a whole 10 dollars! lol. We played for about an hour and a half before we started to pack up and head to the venue down the road. As we were driving we met TIM FOREMAN! he was walking on the street shopping by himself. I yelled out his name and he looked at us and walked over to our car and started talking to us! We should his hand and told him we were playing his songs just a few mins ago! he told us to keep it up and that the show was going to be awesome! We were freaking out and didn’t get to snap a photo so you’re going to have to just take my word for it lol
We wait at the venue for an hour before the doors open up. When they finally do, we walk inside and take our seats. It wasn’t long before I realize that I had lost my credit card. It must have fallen out of my pocket. I was freaking out so I retraced my steps outside to my car. As I walk outside I spot Jerome Fontamillas! He was walking from town to the venue with his backpack! I yelled out “WHOA!” and he gave me a quick finger gun point and rushed inside.
I couldnt find my card so i called the company to cancel the card. But as I was about to finalize the cancellation, when suddenly i hear over the speakers, “Attention everyone, will David Quilatan please meet me by the doors, i have found your credit card!” The crowd started cheering and i started laughing. I rush over to the doors and grab my card from the guy. THANK GOD!
The opening band was Bottle Of Justice and they played some really cool songs! Then SWITCHFOOT came out. The crowd, as usual, went nuts! Their opener was “The War Inside.” Their fourth song was “Restless” and Jon Foreman came into the crowd! He stepped over a few rows into our row! he started walking towards my friend and I. He stopped right over my seat and we held hands and gave highfives! Such a cool moment! He gave me a look and a smile and held my hand for support so he wouldnt fall. I thought I was about to fall! Their setlist was great as usual. They came out and did a two song encore. Awesome concert overall.
We walk outside and we decide to stick around to see if they come out and talk to the fans later in the night. Erik and I whip out our guitars and start walking toward the venue from the parking lot. Some people were outside waiting for the same thing as us. One person asked us if we could play some songs! Jon usually comes out after shows and plays and “aftershow” for the fans for free. I guess i took his place for this show haha. It was an awesome time. people started crowding and singing along. It was an experience like none other. Nothing like playing a song where people sing along.
our goal was to draw Jon outside to sing with us. I played some of Jon’s solo songs and more people sang along. I asked the crowd if there are any girls who like to sing. This girl said that she enjoys singing so I ask her if she would sing "House of God Forever" with me. she kindly agrees and i ask her to stand next to me. I sang the first verse and when i hit the chorus she opened her mouth to sing. I could believe what I was hearing! Her voice was AMAZING! it was so soft yet strong. It was such an awesome time. Amazing experience!  Her name was Treasure and i dont think i could forget that name haha
We sang “Dare You to Move” as loud as we could and we “drew” Drew Shirley outside! He came and we all started to gather around him. He said “oh i see we got an aftershow going on!” it was cool! he told us we sounded great. I told him a joke and he started laughing. he signed our guitars and we took a picture with him! it was amazing! We sang more song even after he left until the heavens opened up and it started to rain. it was an experience that was "Once in a lifetime."  can’t wait till they come back to Illinois  again!

We are constantly trying to fulfill a much greater desire. A desire much bigger than anything we can experience on this earth.
